Konewa Cottage in the heart of the Pohangina Valley

Bed & Breakfast

Farm & Stream

The garden, like all gardens, is an ongoing project. The gardens in front of the cottage are best in summer when they are filled with dahlias and roses. The long hot days can easily slip by on the verandah smelling the roses and watching the native birds.

The bird life is wonderful and it is not to hard to convince a fantail to dance for you. The woodpigeons cross the walnut paddocks like fully-laden bombers and then there is Mr Tui! He lives in the tree outside the bedroom window and is a crabby but harmless fellow. There are also domestic ducks on the pond (and sometimes wild ones). And occassionally you can see paradise ducks, blue herons, spur-winged plovers and hear bell-birds around the farm.

Please feel free to wander the property at will, there is a track running behind the cottage to the pines and another along a ridge above the Konewa Stream. This provides lovely views of the stream and there is a pleasant place to sit and watch the water flow past below.

The previous owner of the property was something of a collector of trees and some unusual ones are contained in the property. There is a Redwood and several Beeches on the cottage driveway. Further up the back there is a cyprus and several trees we have yet to identify. A number of camellias bloom around the cottage in spring.

The Konewa stream flows thorough the property and you have private acess to it. It is a stunningly beautiful stream especially in the summer when the level drops and you can easly walk up it. There are one or two swimming holes which are completely secluded and a lovely place to picnic.

In the winter access is more limited but you will still have access to the lower part of the stream. In July and August the Konewa becomes home to many amorous trout.
